Host Question:
What was the hardest class you took in studying agriculture, forestry management?
Guest Answer:
Ag stats. That was a challenging one, even though they relate it back to agriculture and something that you can relate to. It’s still very challenging. However, I am very fortunate that I had a great professor and I actually truly enjoyed it in the end, and I was glad that I took that class because I actually use it today to.
Guest Answer:
Definitely organic chemistry. I thought I had to take two sources of that in the lab. I could have switched out and gotten a environmental studies degree, and they don’t have to take any of the hard sciences that a lot of us were like so easy. Like it’s just like fluff degree because it was we had that opinion. We like biology. Like we have to take physics, we have to take cell biology, we have to take organic chemistry. So we’re going to do it. Then my brain definitely works very much more mathematically. And organic chemistry is not like your typical chemistry. We solve equations, it’s very model focused and lot of spatial stuff and a lot of it the answers aren’t necessarily cut and dry. So it was very challenging, but I actually did enjoy it in the end.
Guest Answer:
So it wasn’t an entire course in and of itself. But any time I took a course that had ArcGIS related aspects to it, I found that very difficult. Part of that was because my school didn’t offer like a full intro to their archive primer. And part of it is because I just happened to find it very difficult and non-intuitive. It’s a super useful skill to have and I’m still working on it to this day and I highly recommend trying to take several art jazz courses because it’s going to be helpful for almost any subfield you go into under environmental management. But that was something I definitely struggled with in school was anytime there was an art project.
Guest Answer:
Physics was the hardest, even though it’s like physics and should be easy because it’s more tangible than, let’s say, like organic chemistry, physics. For me, it just wasn’t intuitive. It just didn’t make sense. I got through it, I got bs, but they were hard fought after BS.
Guest Answer:
I’d say it was actually my ecology class because my professor, when giving the test, they really wanted us to take the concepts that we learned and use them as if we were literally managing a land area. So the questions would be very broad and vague, like asking about a farm field near Forest and asking what’s the best practice for this farmer to do to protect the crops, but also to support local bird populations? And then we’d have to answer that with recommendations we would actually give and back them up. So this class made me think hard and critically. It was a very hard cut.
Guest Answer:
Environmental economics. I had a really hard time going to class, but then the second time I took it, I still struggled. A lot of it was theory. My professor, his name is Dr. Terrace, I loved him. He’d always help me with my class, go over everything. But it was a lot of the concepts, all of the concepts that were understood. But it was a lot of the math and really memorization.
